Mainly political correspondence, including anonymous letters reviling the gag rule of 1838, together with commissions, and a few letters of Atherton's father, Charles Humphrey Atherton (1773-1853), Amherst lawyer and member of Congress, of Atherton's grandfather Joshua Atherton (1737-1809), attorney-general of New Hampshire, and of the two husbands of Joshua's daughter Frances, William Gordon (1763-1802), member of Congress, and Benjamin West (1746-1817), lawyer of Charlestown, N H., some written by the latter to his wife from the Hartford Convention of 1814.
